When it comes to home decor, painting the interior is a major factor in setting the tone for the overall look of a room. There are many factors to consider, such as the color, whether to use multiple colors, and even implementing things such as half-wall panels and/or molding.

Choosing the color and style is a matter of personal choice, one that should your reflect your unique personal taste as well as complement the decor of the room. Equally important and often overlooked is the finish of the paint, and which sheens hold up best under the use of that particular room.

High gloss paints – High gloss paints are the most recommended finish for trim, doors, molding and accent areas in the room. High gloss paints are designed to highlight an area of the room, not overtake the interior. In order for the paint to adhere properly to the surface, it is important that the surface be cleaned and polished. Any unsightly marks will be more visible in a high gloss sheen, so it is important to rid the surface of them before painting.

Semigloss paints – Semigloss paint is an excellent choice to highlight moldings, trim and doors in a child’s room. Not only are they a good way to accent the room, the finish can withstand the amount of cleaning that is the norm for a child’s room. Semigloss paints are also an option for kitchen and bathrooms, due to their high level of moisture and humidity.

Satin paints – A satin paint finish is in between a flat finish and a glossy finish. Although it can be rubbed lightly without damaging its finish, it cannot withstand the amount of cleaning needed for rooms such bathrooms and kitchens. Satin paints work best in rooms such as family rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms.

Eggshell paints – This is for achieving a low-luster, decorative finish that is more attractive than flat paint. While it can be washed, it cannot withstand vigorous cleaning. Eggshell finish is a good choice for a living room or a master bedroom.

Flat paints – This is the finish most often recommended for ceilings. Flat paints do not hold up well under regular cleaning, and are best used in places that do not require it, such as the ceiling.
