Interior Painting Tips: DYI Doors & Windows

Interior Painting Tips

Painting the different parts of your interior all require different techniques. How a door, window, trim lines and similar are painted all require different techniques. Yet similarly, each different type of surface needs to be prepped before paint applications begin. Painting the doors and windows of your home are commonly seen as a seemingly complex interior paint job. Master Brush Painting has—you guessed it—mastered the skills and services required for proper interior painting. Below are a few key points from the paint masters, to help you do-it-yourselfers paint your home’s door and windows like the pros would.

The Proper Door Painting Process

The prep steps necessary to complete before a door can be painted include a few simple basics. Be sure that the door has no dents, holes or similar imperfections that could hinder the final painting results. Tape-off hardware, such as handles, knobs, hinges and locks if you are keeping the door in-frame while painting (though it may be easier to paint if the door is off of its hinges). Also be sure that there is not excess old paint on the door’s surface. Simple sanding and a good wipe-down is all you need to remove chipping, uneven and aged paint.

Once a door is properly prepared for paint applications it is ready to finally be coated:

  • First paint un-seen areas of the door (top and bottom edges, hard-to-reach areas, etc. …).
  • Identify the type of door style, to know which technique to utilize.
  • Paneled doors are painted panel-by-panel first, then from top to bottom.
  • Smooth grain doors are simply painted in vertical strokes.
  • Apply paint liberally, and brush away excess as you go—in even portions. Paint in the same direction of the door’s grain.
  • Apply a second coat of paint if necessary.

Accurate Window Painting Techniques

Before a window can be painted it must first be prepared. Similar to door painting prep, check for dents, holes or other issues that could hinder paint results. Tape-off hardware and interior window edges and trim, as not to get paint on surrounding walls themselves. Clean windows and remove any old and chipping paint coatings before applying a new one.

After window-painting preparations are complete, you can finally begin painting the interior window:

  • Paint the lower and upper parts (or each side) of your window separately.
  • Like doors, be sure to get paint coverage on hard-to-reach areas.
  • Complete window paint tasks by also touching up its trim with paint application.
  • Add a second coat of paint if necessary.
